Senior Congress leader Kamal Nath criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Madhya Pradesh, stating that the state’s economy has deteriorated under its governance. He highlighted that the BJP’s policies have led the state into a significant debt crisis, with a potential revenue loss of around Rs 50,000 crore in the next five years. Nath expressed concern over the declining share of central taxes for Madhya Pradesh, attributing the financial strain to poor management by the state government.
The former Chief Minister pointed out that despite the BJP holding power at both the state and central levels, it has failed to address the financial challenges faced by Madhya Pradesh. He emphasized the need for stronger financial assistance from the Union government to support the state’s economy. Nath criticized the BJP-led government for neglecting the state’s financial well-being, stating that the debt burden has surpassed the annual budget, creating a severe economic crisis.
Nath’s remarks precede the upcoming presentation of Madhya Pradesh’s annual budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. The Congress party has demanded transparency regarding the escalating debt under the BJP’s administration and has announced plans for a protest on February 24. Recent economic evaluations indicate that Madhya Pradesh’s outstanding debt has exceeded Rs 5.31 lakh crore, constituting over five percent of India’s total state debt.
