The Karkardooma Court in Delhi will determine the punishment for former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain and four others involved in the murder of IB officer Ankit Sharma during the 2020 northeast Delhi riots. Hussain and his co-accused were convicted on charges of murder, rioting, kidnapping, and inciting enmity on July 13. The court will decide between life imprisonment or the death penalty for Hussain based on the sentencing arguments to be heard on July 23.

The prosecution alleged that Ankit Sharma was killed near his home in Khajuri Khas during the violence between two groups on February 25, 2020. It was claimed that Sharma was abducted by a mob, assaulted, and stabbed multiple times before his body was disposed of in a drain. Tahir Hussain was found guilty of various offenses including promoting enmity, rioting, assault, use of criminal force, and murder in the case filed by Sharma’s father at the Dayalpur police station.

The court’s judgment led to Hussain’s suspension from the Aam Aadmi Party after his involvement in the case came to light. The violence in northeast Delhi in February 2020 resulted in 53 fatalities, numerous injuries, and extensive property damage.
