Karnataka’s Chief Electoral Officer, V. Anbu Kumar, has directed Deputy Commissioners in the state to ensure strict adherence to the Election Commission of India’s guidelines for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. This action was taken in response to complaints that Enumeration Forms were being distributed from offices instead of through door-to-door visits.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi raised concerns about alleged interference by the Karnataka government in the SIR of electoral rolls in Ramanagara district. He called for an impartial investigation into the reported irregularities.
The ongoing SIR of electoral rolls in Ramanagara district faced further scrutiny when Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy highlighted what he described as a “massive scam.” He released a video to expose the alleged irregularities.
To address the complaints, the Chief Electoral Officer instructed Deputy Commissioners to ensure that Booth Level Officers (BLOs) distribute Enumeration Forms by visiting every household, as mandated by the ECI. This directive aims to uphold the prescribed door-to-door verification and distribution process during the SIR.
Complaints from various parts of Karnataka prompted the directive, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to the Election Commission’s guidelines in the SIR exercise. District administrations were tasked with ensuring full compliance by all Booth Level Officers.
The Chief Electoral Officer’s communication extended to various officials, including District Election Officers, Deputy Commissioners, and Commissioners of Bengaluru City Corporations. The directive emphasized the importance of following ECI guidelines and ensuring that voters receive necessary assistance in filling enumeration forms.
