In a significant announcement, Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar highlighted the crucial role of the Sharavathi Pumped Storage Project in meeting the state’s future electricity needs. Speaking at the 57th Foundation Day celebrations of Karnataka Power Corporation Limited, he emphasized the government’s commitment to implementing the project despite objections.
Shivakumar mentioned the successful establishment of the gas-based power plant at Yelahanka, overcoming initial opposition for the benefit of the state. He also praised the Pavagada Solar Park for involving farmers as stakeholders, setting an example for the nation and generating 2,000 MW of electricity.
The Chief Minister lauded the Gruha Jyothi Scheme, which provides free electricity to 1.61 crore households, and highlighted KPCL’s contribution to its success. Additionally, he noted the substantial annual subsidies for free electricity to agricultural pump sets, resulting in significant savings for the people of Karnataka.
Encouraging unity for the state’s progress, Shivakumar urged KPCL employees to work collaboratively as “Team Karnataka” towards development and prosperity. The Sharavathi Pumped Storage Hydropower Project, with an envisaged capacity of 2,000 MWe, remains under review by the Government of India due to environmental concerns, potentially becoming one of the largest pumped storage hydroelectric projects in the country.
