Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for urgent assistance due to a looming drought in the state. The Chief Minister highlighted a significant rainfall deficit, low reservoir levels, and the increasing pressure on agriculture and water supply.
Shivakumar pointed out that Karnataka has experienced a 30% rainfall deficit compared to the normal levels for this time of the year. This shortage has impacted a large portion of the state, with 18 out of 31 districts facing varying degrees of rainfall deficit.
The agricultural sector has been severely affected by the delayed monsoon onset and prolonged dry spells. Kharif sowing has only covered 34% of the seasonal target due to the adverse weather conditions. Additionally, the water situation is dire, with major reservoirs in Karnataka at only 34% of their total capacity.
The Chief Minister emphasized the need for immediate action to address the crisis and requested the central government to send a team to assess the situation on the ground and provide necessary aid to the affected regions.
