Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, G. Parameshwara, highlighted the state’s critical drought situation, urging the Centre to declare it a national disaster. He emphasized the severity of the drought, stating that efforts are underway to assess the impact in affected areas like Chikkaballapura district and Bengaluru Rural. Parameshwara mentioned upcoming review meetings for different divisions and the state’s appeal for additional financial aid and flexibility in drought-related regulations.

Parameshwara stressed the widespread impact of the drought across Karnataka, prompting requests for more funds and relaxed drought declaration norms from the Centre. He specifically reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking national disaster status due to the escalating crisis. Noting similar conditions in neighboring states, Parameshwara advocated for a unified approach in addressing the drought as a national calamity affecting multiple regions.

Regarding the anticipated Cabinet expansion, Parameshwara clarified that the process awaits approval from the Congress high command. He disclosed ongoing discussions involving Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and KPCC president B.K. Hariprasad in Delhi. The Deputy Chief Minister anticipated a clearer timeline for the Cabinet expansion by noon, emphasizing the need for enhanced representation from Tumakuru district in the state’s leadership.

Parameshwara reiterated his call for a second international airport in Karnataka, proposing Tumakuru as an ideal location due to its strategic connectivity. He also commented on the recent political controversy surrounding national-level exam irregularities and the subsequent arrest of Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra during a protest in New Delhi. Parameshwara supported Rahul Gandhi’s demand for accountability from the government, citing the natural expectation for resignations in the face of such issues.
