Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar criticized the Central government for its silence on the shortage of cooking gas cylinders, which is impacting various sectors nationwide. He highlighted that the hotel industry is particularly affected, facing a potential shutdown due to inadequate gas cylinder supplies. Shivakumar emphasized the need for the government to address this critical issue promptly.
Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje attributed the gas cylinder shortage to global geopolitical tensions and India’s heavy reliance on imported petroleum products. She pointed out that conflicts in the Middle East have disrupted petroleum supplies, affecting many countries, including India. Karandlaje stressed the importance of finding solutions to mitigate the impact of these shortages on the nation.
Shivakumar expressed concerns about the government’s foreign policy approach, urging clarity on the issue and calling for Members of Parliament to address the crisis. He raised alarm over the potential closure of hotels and its ripple effects on hospitals due to the gas cylinder scarcity. Shivakumar also criticized the lack of alternative arrangements by the Centre to alleviate the shortage, emphasizing the need for immediate action.
Responding to his tenure as the state Congress President, Shivakumar expressed gratitude to Sonia Gandhi for appointing him to the position. He mentioned that celebrations were postponed due to the ongoing Assembly session, with a dinner arranged for all MLAs instead. When questioned about the Chief Minister position, Shivakumar refrained from commenting, stating his focus on fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted to him by the party.
