Deputy Chief Minister and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President D.K. Shivakumar commended the peaceful conduct of campaigning in the bye-election constituencies of Bagalkot and Davanagere South. He praised all political parties for maintaining decorum during the process. Shivakumar highlighted the cooperation received from government officials to ensure the smooth progress of the elections.

In Davanagere, Shivakumar mentioned his and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s involvement in the nomination filing of party candidates in both constituencies. He emphasized the Congress party’s practice of consulting all stakeholders before selecting new candidates. Despite initial attempts to create confusion in Davanagere South, Shivakumar noted that many leaders withdrew from the race, strengthening the party.

Shivakumar pointed out the developmental advancements in Davanagere South, surpassing those in Bengaluru, particularly in infrastructure like concrete roads, parks, and lake cleanliness. He praised the late senior leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa for his inclusive work at the age of 95, contributing significantly to societal development in the region. Additionally, Shivakumar acknowledged the contributions of Mallikarjun.

Based on internal survey results, Shivakumar claimed that over 70% of voters in the constituency lean towards supporting the Congress candidate. He highlighted the consistent contributions of Shivashankarappa’s family to various sectors like health, education, and social welfare. The peaceful environment in the constituency under Shivashankarappa’s leadership was noted, with positive feedback from traders and minority communities.

Shivakumar mentioned the party’s decision to field a young, educated, and capable candidate after collective discussions among party leaders. He shared the success story of Prabha Mallikarjun, the candidate’s mother, who initially hesitated but eventually won and is now serving effectively in Parliament. Shivakumar expressed confidence in the party’s candidate to carry forward the legacy of community service and generosity established by Shivashankarappa.
