The Karnataka Energy Department is set to launch a door-to-door verification drive for beneficiaries of the Gruha Jyothi Scheme starting from July 1. This initiative aims to update and verify beneficiary records under the state government’s flagship free electricity program. Meter readers and officials from all five Electricity Supply Companies (ESCOMs) will visit beneficiaries’ homes to verify records and collect necessary information using a mobile application and a declaration form.
The verification drive will cover all five ESCOM jurisdictions, including Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM), Mangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (MESCOM), Hubli Electricity Supply Company Limited (HESCOM), Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company Limited (GESCOM), and Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation Limited (CESC). Beneficiaries are advised to keep essential documents like Aadhaar card, photograph, Voter ID card, PAN card, tenancy agreement, ration card, and caste certificate ready for verification during the officials’ visit.
Officials emphasize the importance of physical verification by meter readers to ensure accurate beneficiary details. The Energy Department urges all Gruha Jyothi beneficiaries and electricity consumers to cooperate with the verification process for a smooth and timely completion. The door-to-door verification campaign will kick off simultaneously across all ESCOM jurisdictions on July 1.
The Gruha Jyothi Scheme in Karnataka offers eligible domestic consumers up to 200 units of free electricity monthly. Launched in July 2023, this scheme benefits households that register and stay within their sanctioned limit based on past usage. If consumption exceeds the limit, beneficiaries only pay for the excess units. With around 1.64-1.74 crore registered domestic electricity consumers in Karnataka, the scheme has been allocated Rs 10,578 crore in the 2026-27 State Budget, with approximately Rs 28,000 crore spent since its inception.
