Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister and Revenue Minister, G. Parameshwara, stated that the state government is well-prepared to address the current severe drought conditions. He emphasized that there is no lack of financial resources for relief efforts. Parameshwara highlighted that Karnataka is experiencing one of its most severe drought situations in recent history, with rainfall significantly below normal levels.
Parameshwara assured that the government has allocated funds to guarantee ample drinking water supply throughout the state. He mentioned the allocation of Rs 1 crore to each MLA and Rs 5 crore to every district for water supply, with sufficient funds already available. Review meetings on drought readiness have been conducted in some regions, with upcoming meetings planned for Bengaluru and Mysuru divisions to assess the situation comprehensively.
The Deputy Chief Minister instructed Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officers to provide immediate employment under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme to prevent migration from drought-affected areas. He also disclosed that the state government has requested assistance from the Centre, awaiting a response expected in August. Parameshwara addressed concerns over agricultural activities, stating that farmers are hopeful for August rainfall to replant crops after initial sowing was hampered by insufficient rain.
