Karnataka’s Minister for Public Works Department, Satish Jarkiholi, emphasized that the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) cannot be banned. He clarified that the Congress-led government in Karnataka has never proposed banning the RSS. Jarkiholi made these remarks in response to a challenge by former BJP MP Ananth Kumar Hegde, who questioned the state government’s ability to ban the RSS.
He highlighted that despite any statements made, there has been no official ban on the RSS in Karnataka. Jarkiholi stated that it is unlikely that anyone would be able to ban the organization, emphasizing that there is no intention to do so. Responding to statements by Minister for RDPR, IT and BT Priyank Kharge regarding banning RSS activities, Jarkiholi differentiated between banning activities and banning the Sangh itself.
Jarkiholi addressed the issue of internal reservation confusion, mentioning that it will be discussed and resolved in an upcoming cabinet meeting. He acknowledged the existing confusion in the state and emphasized the need to provide clarity on the matter. When questioned about allegations of the government favoring one side in the issue, Jarkiholi refuted the claims, stating that the government aims to find a fair resolution in the forthcoming cabinet meeting.
Minister for RDPR, IT and BT Priyank Kharge had urged Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to ban RSS activities in public places and government-owned premises through a letter. This call for a ban had led to tensions between Congress and BJP leaders. Subsequently, the government issued an order deeming gatherings of over 10 persons without permission illegal, including foot marches or public events, a move deemed unconstitutional.
