Karnataka’s Home Minister, Priyank Kharge, criticized BJP MP Ramesh Jigajinagi for questioning why Dalits should be concerned about the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Jigajinagi had warned Kharge against targeting the RSS, stating that no one who has challenged the organization has survived politically. In response, Kharge defended his right to question the RSS’s ideology and operations, accusing Jigajinagi of discouraging scrutiny of the organization.
Kharge raised concerns about the role of Dalits within the RSS and its broader ideological framework. He questioned whether Jigajinagi’s remarks reflected frustration over Dalits’ acceptance within the RSS and whether it was a warning against associating with an organization that upholds a hierarchical social order. The minister also challenged Jigajinagi’s statement that those who confront the RSS do not survive, questioning if it implied the RSS eliminates dissenting voices.
Reaffirming his commitment to B.R. Ambedkar’s principles, Kharge emphasized that he would not be intimidated by threats or warnings. He drew strength from Ambedkar’s ideology, asserting that the courage to question and the spirit of rational inquiry were paramount. Kharge emphasized that his fear was only of a lack of morality, not threats, as he believed in upholding Ambedkar’s legacy and values.
The political clash between the Congress and the BJP has intensified over the RSS’s role and functioning, with leaders from both parties engaging in heated exchanges recently.
