Karnataka Minister for Bengaluru Development, Krishna Byre Gowda, has initiated a campaign to clear abandoned vehicles from public spaces in Bengaluru. The minister highlighted that these vehicles obstruct footpaths and roads, creating an unsightly environment and inconveniencing pedestrians.
Byre Gowda personally affixed notices on abandoned vehicles and immobilized their tires to kick off the operation. Despite a prior warning to owners, many abandoned vehicles remain unattended, prompting the current enforcement action.
Authorities, including the Traffic Police and civic corporations, have identified 1,571 abandoned vehicles across Bengaluru. Owners have been given a week to reclaim their vehicles by paying a Rs 500 penalty; otherwise, the vehicles will be towed and eventually auctioned if not retrieved.
To deter owners from evading penalties by shifting their abandoned vehicles, Byre Gowda emphasized the imposition of stricter consequences for repeat offenders. The minister urged citizens to report abandoned vehicles through the Traffic Police’s Astram app to ensure effective enforcement and maintain public spaces.
