The Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA) in Bengaluru organized a special event to recognize Rohan Bopanna’s remarkable career in tennis. The ceremony, held at the KSLTA Lawns, brought together tennis stars, family, and friends to celebrate Bopanna’s achievements spanning over two decades. Bopanna, India’s successful tennis professional, has secured Grand Slam titles, notably at the 2017 French Open in mixed doubles and the 2024 Australian Open men’s doubles.
In 2024, Bopanna made history by becoming the oldest world No. 1 in men’s doubles, showcasing his enduring fitness and excellence on the ATP Tour. With more than 25 ATP Tour doubles titles and several Grand Slam finals under his belt, Bopanna has consistently competed among the world’s elite players. His significant contributions to Indian tennis include representing the nation in Davis Cup teams for over ten years and excelling in various home and away ties.
During the 2010 Davis Cup World Group Playoff against Brazil in Chennai, Bopanna’s pivotal singles victory over Ricardo Mello led India to a remarkable 3-2 comeback from a 0-2 deficit, securing a place in the World Group. This victory remains a standout moment in India’s Davis Cup history. Additionally, Bopanna has represented India at multiple Olympic Games, enhancing the country’s global sporting presence.
Born in Coorg, Karnataka, on March 4, 1980, Bopanna’s tennis journey began at a young age, eventually moving to Bengaluru for professional training. Transitioning from singles to doubles, Bopanna’s powerful serve, aggressive style, and tactical prowess have propelled him to success at the highest levels of the sport. Beyond his on-court achievements, Bopanna’s commitment to Indian tennis is evident through the Rohan Bopanna Tennis Development Foundation, focusing on grassroots initiatives and nurturing young talent nationwide.
Sunil Yajaman, joint-secretary of KSLTA, praised Bopanna’s professionalism, leadership, and lasting impact, setting new standards and inspiring a generation of Indian doubles players to aim for success on the global stage.
