Karolína Muchová secured her spot in the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the third time by triumphing over compatriot and former champion Barbora Krejčíková in a thrilling fourth-round match. The intense encounter ended with Muchová prevailing 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, guaranteeing a new women’s singles champion at the All England Club this year.
Having faced four consecutive first-round exits in London, Muchová broke the streak with a solid performance lasting two hours and 45 minutes. This victory marked her eighth consecutive win following her triumph at the Bad Homburg Open and positioned her for a quarter-final clash against either world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka or four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka.
The initial set was fiercely contested, with both players saving numerous break points before Muchová capitalized in the 12th game, clinching the set 7-5 on her first set point.
In the second set, Muchová initially seemed on track for a comfortable win after breaking serve to lead 5-2. However, Krejčíková, known for her versatility and finesse, staged a remarkable comeback, winning five consecutive games to take the set 7-5 and force a deciding third set.
Muchová swiftly took control in the final set, surging to a 4-1 lead after the score was tied at 1-1. Despite Krejčíková’s physical struggles towards the end, Muchová maintained her composure, closing out the match and securing her quarter-final berth.
Competing on Court 2, Muchová showcased her versatile game, winning 23 of 31 net approaches with a 74% success rate, while Krejčíková managed 18 of 33 net points.
Statistically, Muchová’s dominance was evident, with 50 winners and 29 unforced errors compared to Krejčíková’s 24 winners and 32 unforced errors. This match marked their first encounter on the WTA Tour, leveling their head-to-head record at 2-2, including ITF events.
Muchová’s victory also extended her impressive streak of 11 consecutive wins against fellow Czech players on the WTA Tour.
