Kerala’s enthusiasm for football soared as the state government announced a holiday for all educational institutions on Monday. This decision allows students to stay up and enjoy the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina without worrying about attending classes the next day. The holiday includes schools under the General Education Department, colleges, universities, and professional institutions under the Higher Education Department.

The Chief Minister, V.D. Satheesan, directed this move after receiving numerous appeals from football enthusiasts, especially students, on social media. With the final scheduled to start at 12:30 a.m. IST on Monday, it would have been challenging for students to attend classes after a late-night match. Football holds a special place in Kerala, where the sport’s popularity is second only to cricket in other parts of the country.

In the lead-up to the final, towns and villages in Kerala have been transformed into football hubs. Giant cut-outs of international stars adorn roadsides, junctions, and playgrounds. Supporters of Spain and Argentina have put up large banners, flags, and decorative arches. Local fan clubs have organized public screenings, rallies, and celebrations, creating a festive atmosphere across the state.

The overwhelming response from football fans influenced the government’s decision. Several schools in Ernakulam had already declared a holiday following requests from students and parents. The state government’s announcement brought consistency to the decision, ensuring that students statewide could witness the championship match. Higher Education Minister Roji M. John confirmed the closure of all higher education institutions, including professional colleges, on Monday to allow students to watch the prestigious football event without the hassle of traveling to campuses after a sleepless night.

General Education Minister N. Samsudheen also confirmed a holiday for schools under his department through a social media post, addressing the football-loving students with a playful, “Happy now, kids?” The government considered the sentiments of these students before finalizing the decision. With public viewing centers, giant screens, and football-themed celebrations planned across Kerala, the state is gearing up for an unforgettable night as hundreds of thousands of fans come together to support their favorite teams in the FIFA World Cup final.
