The Kerala government, as announced by Fisheries Minister V.E. Abdul Gafoor, is set to establish a knowledge cluster that will bring together various research institutions and agencies in the fisheries sector. This initiative aims to facilitate the sharing of expertise, research findings, and technological innovations among the participating entities. The proposed cluster is crucial in addressing the emerging challenges faced by the fisheries sector and in fostering the development of sustainable solutions.
Abdul Gafoor emphasized the significance of this move, especially in light of the mounting pressures on the fisheries industry due to factors like climate change, shifting weather patterns, and the dwindling availability of certain fish species that were once abundant. He highlighted the urgent need for scientific intervention and collaborative efforts to combat these challenges effectively. The minister stressed that climate change and related environmental transformations pose serious threats to fisheries resources, underscoring the necessity for coordinated action and scientific interventions.
In leading the coordination efforts, the Fisheries Department will work closely with research bodies and other stakeholders to enhance scientific support, implement effective policy interventions, and promote sustainable fisheries management practices. The minister also disclosed that the preliminary proposal for the development of the Munambam Fisheries Harbour, a Rs 200-crore project, was reviewed during a stakeholder consultation at the CMFRI. The project aims to modernize the harbor infrastructure to ensure compliance with international export standards for fishery products.
The plan for the Munambam Fisheries Harbour includes the incorporation of modern features inspired by Kochi Harbour, such as 12-meter-wide roads and multi-level parking facilities for heavy vehicles. Additionally, the proposal envisions a Green Smart Harbour concept, integrating environmentally sustainable infrastructure, advanced waste management systems, and energy-efficient facilities. To enhance navigational safety and harbor operations, a signal station is also part of the proposed development. The stakeholders have decided to create a 3D model of the project within a month to facilitate funding support from central schemes like the PMMSY and Sagarmala.
