Kerala Governor Rajendra V. Arlekar has intervened to stop the Syndicate of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit (SSUS) from giving away six acres of university land for a cricket stadium construction project. The land, valued at about Rs 100 crore, was set to be transferred to the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) without any cost. Following a complaint by the Save University Campaign Committee (SUCC), the Governor has asked the Vice-Chancellor for an explanation on the decision-making process.
The Syndicate, mainly comprising CPI-M members, approved the leasing of six acres of university land for 33 years to the KCA. This decision has sparked controversy, especially as opposition members and the Save University Campaign Committee raised concerns over the move. The issue has gained political significance, with critics pointing out discrepancies in how similar proposals involving other universities have been handled.
Critics have highlighted the case of the Karyavattom Greenfield Stadium, where a substantial amount is owed in lease arrears for a larger piece of land. The decision to transfer university land worth Rs 100 crore has drawn criticism for potential political influence. Governor Arlekar, utilizing powers under the Sanskrit University Act, has put a hold on the land transfer and retains the authority to revoke the Syndicate’s decision.
