Virginia Tourism Corporation is intensifying its collaboration with India’s travel industry to increase overnight stays and visitor expenditure following India’s rise as the second-largest international source market for the US state and its primary overseas market, as per a recent report.
Preliminary data indicates that in 2025, Virginia hosted over 65,000 Indian tourists, resulting in approximately $112 million in visitor spending. Comparatively, in 2024, the state saw more than 69,000 Indian arrivals, contributing around $124 million to the economy.
During a meeting with Indian travel partners, Heidi Johannesen, Managing Director of Global Markets at Virginia Tourism Corporation, attributed the slight decline in arrivals to broader geopolitical changes and visa-related obstacles.
Virginia’s tourism authorities emphasized the need to expand Indian tour operators and travel advisors’ awareness about Virginia’s attractions beyond the commonly visited Luray Caverns, which many Indian tourists currently explore as a day trip from the Washington, DC, region without overnight accommodations.
Christi Braginton, Director of Global Markets at Virginia Tourism Corporation, highlighted the state’s diverse offerings, including Mount Vernon, Monticello, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg, and Fairfax County, which often go unnoticed by visitors.
Officials mentioned that Virginia’s tourism appeal ranges from mountains and beaches to vineyards, culinary experiences, theme parks, and some of the most significant historical sites in the United States.
To enhance visibility, Virginia Tourism Corporation conducts cooperative marketing campaigns, engages in trade and consumer media outreach, initiates social media campaigns, and interacts directly with Indian travel partners.
Additionally, officials encouraged visitors to explore Virginia if they seek to immerse themselves in the ongoing festivities commemorating 250 years of American independence, with Colonial Williamsburg hosting various celebratory events like fireworks displays, historical demonstrations, and re-enactments.
