Kerala has initiated ‘Operation Toofan’ to crack down on drug networks, with 2,954 cases filed and 3,176 individuals arrested, as disclosed by Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala in the Assembly. The state aims to transform this effort into a widespread movement against drug abuse by involving notable figures in the cause. Chennithala has personally engaged with celebrities, community leaders, and religious heads to enlist them as ‘Toofan Warriors’ to raise awareness and bolster the campaign.
Special Investigation Teams have been dispatched to all 84 police sub-divisions in Kerala to enhance the fight against the drug trade. Chennithala expressed concern over the escalating drug situation in Kerala, surpassing levels seen in Punjab. Emphasizing the need for united action transcending political boundaries, he acknowledged that eradicating this menace requires collective endeavors. The campaign has garnered significant support from various sectors, with families, educational institutions, and community organizations playing vital roles.
To prevent the influx of narcotics from other states, stringent measures are being implemented in Kerala. Chennithala highlighted the widespread impact of drug abuse, noting its pervasiveness across all societal strata, including an increasing number of female users. Instances of drug use often come to light during routine bag checks in several locations.
