State Minister for Culture and Films, Saji Cherian, addressed the controversy surrounding Malayalam actor Prem Kumar’s removal as Chairman-in-Charge of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy. The Minister clarified that the change in leadership was procedural and not related to the actor’s opinions or statements. This response followed Prem Kumar expressing disappointment over his removal on social media.
Minister Cherian emphasized that the Kerala government respects the right of cultural figures to express independent views, even if they differ from the government’s stance. He explained that the decision to replace Prem Kumar was due to the end of the governing body’s tenure, not personal disagreements. The Minister highlighted that the government does not remove individuals based on their personal opinions.
Prem Kumar had previously served as Vice-Chairman and then Chairman-in-Charge of the Academy. Minister Cherian praised his performance but clarified that a new committee was required due to the end of the governing body’s term. Acclaimed sound designer Resul Pookutty has now assumed the role of Chairman, a change that Prem Kumar reportedly welcomed. Minister Cherian acknowledged the need for better communication regarding the decision and offered dialogue to address any concerns.
Seeking to end the episode, Minister Cherian commended Prem Kumar’s artistic contributions and service to the Academy. He assured that the actor’s work is highly valued, aiming to put a close to the controversy.
