Kerala’s efforts to eradicate tuberculosis have gained significant support from Kudumbashree, the state’s extensive women’s community network. In collaboration with the Health Department, Kudumbashree is working to enhance the TB-Free Kerala campaign. The State TB Cell is training Kudumbashree officials to spread awareness in communities for early detection and treatment of tuberculosis.
By utilizing Kudumbashree’s widespread presence in villages and urban areas, the government aims to detect symptoms early, promote testing, and ensure uninterrupted treatment for those diagnosed. The training program focused on educating officials about tuberculosis symptoms, transmission, available diagnostics, treatment procedures, and the role of nutrition in recovery. Emphasis was also placed on dispelling the stigma associated with tuberculosis, which often hinders diagnosis and treatment.
Participants were introduced to the TB Mukt Bharat mobile app, supporting the national tuberculosis elimination program and enhancing community involvement. Kudumbashree officials have committed to actively supporting the state’s TB eradication efforts by raising awareness and urging people to seek medical care promptly. Health authorities stress the importance of community engagement in achieving Kerala’s goal of eliminating tuberculosis, with Kudumbashree expected to be a key community partner in the campaign.
Established by the Kerala Government in 1998, Kudumbashree is a prominent women’s self-help network globally, comprising over 4.5 million members organized into neighborhood groups. Apart from addressing poverty, Kudumbashree plays vital roles in livelihood creation, public health, nutrition, sanitation, and community mobilization, making it a natural ally for public health initiatives like TB-Free Kerala.
