The first cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan in Kerala wasted no time in fulfilling election promises. The government swiftly introduced various welfare decisions, emphasizing a people-centric governance approach. One major announcement included free travel for women on KSRTC buses starting from June 15, fulfilling a UDF campaign pledge.
CM Satheesan also revealed plans to establish a dedicated department for senior citizen welfare, a pioneering step in the country. Inspired by Japan’s elderly care system, a thorough study of the Japanese model will be conducted within two months.
Stressing the importance of caring for the elderly, CM Satheesan expressed his vision for Kerala to become a leading state in senior citizen support. The government also addressed the demands of ASHA workers by approving a Rs 3,000 raise in their honorarium, with retirement benefits updates expected soon.
Furthermore, the cabinet increased wages for Anganwadi workers, catering workers, pre-primary teachers, and ayahs by Rs 1,000. CM Satheesan mentioned that additional benefits would be considered as the state’s financial situation improves. In a notable political move, former CPI(M) leader G. Sudhakaran, supported by the UDF, was appointed Pro-tem Speaker.
The government also appointed Jaiju Babu as Advocate General and T. Asaf Ali as Director General of Prosecution. Additionally, a Special Investigation Team was tasked to probe the alleged assault on Youth Congress workers during the Nava Kerala Sadas program in Alappuzha. CM Satheesan announced plans for a financial White Paper and emphasized the urgency of monsoon preparedness for the new administration.
