North Korean leader Kim Jong-un highlighted the deepening of relations with China as the foremost policy focus during summit discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Pyongyang. The talks between Kim and Xi took place following Xi’s arrival in Pyongyang for his first State Visit in nearly seven years, as reported by Yonhap news agency. Kim, as cited by China’s Xinhua News Agency, described the friendship between North Korea and China as a choice of the people and a necessity of the current era.
Kim underscored that enhancing mutual ties is the most crucial strategic objective for Pyongyang, especially amidst significant global transformations. He reiterated North Korea’s backing of Beijing’s “One China” principle and its commitment to safeguarding China’s core interests. Additionally, Kim expressed determination to cultivate an exemplary relationship between the two nations, aiming to contribute jointly to regional and global peace and prosperity.
Xi affirmed China’s unwavering dedication to safeguarding North Korea’s interests and enhancing practical collaboration in various sectors such as the economy, trade, military, science, and healthcare. Regardless of international dynamics, Xi assured that China’s commitment to protecting the shared interests of both countries and maintaining a favorable strategic environment remains steadfast. He stressed the importance of sustained high-level interactions and the consolidation of political mutual trust to advance bilateral ties.
Xi called for enhanced cooperation in diplomacy, law enforcement, and defense, emphasizing the imperative of upholding each other’s sovereignty, security, and development interests. He expressed readiness to collaborate with Kim to strategically steer bilateral relations and foster further progress in their partnership.
