Kim Yo-jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, has expressed appreciation for South Korea’s commitment to preventing drone incursions into the North. This comes after South Korea’s Unification Minister, Chung Dong-young, acknowledged and regretted the drone intrusions, pledging measures to avoid future incidents. Kim emphasized the importance of safeguarding North Korea’s sovereignty and issued a stern warning against any further violations.
Chung revealed that South Korean individuals had sent drones to North Korea multiple times between September and February, prompting a review of the suspended 2018 military pact with the North. Kim cautioned that South Korea would face severe consequences if such violations recurred, emphasizing the need to protect North Korea’s sovereignty. She underscored the necessity of heightened vigilance along the border with South Korea to prevent any provocations.
Kim Jong-un had previously declared inter-Korean relations as hostile, leading to a series of aggressive policies towards Seoul. In response to North Korea’s swift reaction to Chung’s statement, a South Korean unification ministry official reiterated their commitment to responsibly implementing the prevention measures. The situation remains tense as both sides navigate delicate relations along the border.
