Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that a panel member can chair the Lok Sabha during discussions on removing the Speaker. This remark came amidst objections raised by Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi during the ongoing no-confidence motion debate against Speaker Om Birla.
Gogoi, citing parliamentary rules, argued against the Speaker presiding over his removal resolution discussion. He questioned the selection of Jagdambika Pal to chair the House during this crucial debate.
Rijiju defended that a panel member like Jagdambika Pal can lead the Lok Sabha during proceedings related to the Speaker’s removal. Gogoi, in response, criticized Rijiju for frequently interrupting the Opposition during parliamentary sessions.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah acknowledged Rijiju’s interruptions but criticized the Opposition’s behavior. Gogoi emphasized the importance of the Speaker’s authority in appointing panel members to preside over such debates, highlighting constitutional concerns.
