The Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Joy Kamdar, a Kolkata-based businessman, following raids on his residence and that of Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sinha Biswas. Kamdar, the Managing Director of Sun Enterprise, was taken into custody after hours of questioning by the ED officials. He was detained from his Behala residence in south Kolkata and later arrested under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
During the arrest, Kamdar fell ill on the way to a hospital for a medical check-up and was subsequently taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for further examination. The ED had conducted raids at Kamdar’s residence in Behala and two premises of Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sinha Biswas in the Ballygunge area as part of the same operation. Locals have indicated Kamdar’s involvement in real estate development and construction businesses.
The ED’s investigation is linked to a money laundering case against Sona Pappu, who faces charges of attempted murder and extortion. Pappu, known for running syndicates in Kasba and Ballygunge areas of south Kolkata, is also a prime accused in the Golpark clashes. Officials allege that Pappu extorted significant sums from construction companies, redirecting the funds to influential individuals. The ED had previously seized cash, gold jewelry, silver, and a revolver during searches related to this case.
