Kolkata Police have implemented orders preventing gatherings of over five people within a 200-meter radius of all counting centers ahead of the May 4 vote count for the recent two-phase Assembly elections in West Bengal. This measure aims to prevent tensions, protests, or untoward incidents before the counting process, following the Election Commission of India’s directive. Strict legal actions will be taken against violators of these orders.
In addition to limiting gatherings near the counting centers, Kolkata Police have also prohibited the possession of certain items not authorized by the Election Commission within these designated areas. Security has been heightened at two EVM strong-room locations in Kolkata after an incident on Thursday, with both sites now under a three-tier security cover and restricted vehicular access within a 200-meter radius.
Both EVM strong-room venues have been fortified with heavy steel guard rails to prevent unauthorized entry. Valid identity cards will be required for entry into the restricted zones. Recent tensions arose at one of the venues when political figures alleged tampering with EVMs and postal ballots, leading to a challenging situation for law enforcement in maintaining order.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also visited one of the strong-room sites and echoed concerns of tampering, which were later refuted by the Chief Electoral Officer, supported by relevant documentation.
