Kolkata Police have submitted a charge sheet in the murder case of Ashok Paswan, a young man from a neighborhood in Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim’s ward. Ashok was brutally killed on the streets of Chetla in south Kolkata last October, with a crowbar thrust into his throat, as mentioned in the charge sheet. The incident occurred near the number 17 bus stand during an argument that turned fatal.
The murder took place following a dispute that arose during a drinking session at the open bus stand, leading to the tragic death of Ashok. Despite running about 100 meters in his injured state, Ashok collapsed on the street and was pronounced dead upon arrival at SSKM Hospital. Two young men, Surajit Haldar and Tapas Pal, have been arrested as the main accused in the case, with their names appearing in the 85-page charge sheet along with statements from 30 witnesses.
According to investigators, the argument that culminated in Ashok’s murder was triggered by a disagreement involving one of the accused’s wives during the drinking session. The incident prompted the replacement of the officer in charge of Chetla Police Station with Amitabh Sarkhel taking over. The murder incident, occurring in a prominent area and near the Mayor’s residence, raised concerns about public safety and security, leading to strong reactions from local residents.
