Bengaluru, July 31 (IANS) The Karnataka government has initiated an upgrade of the Hardware Security Module (HSM) that supports Aadhaar authentication services across various government departments, in a move aimed at strengthening cyber security, improving reliability and ensuring uninterrupted delivery of citizen services.

Announcing the initiative, Home, Information Technology and Biotechnology, and e‑Governance Minister Priyank Kharge on Friday said the upgrade is a preventive technological enhancement designed to bolster the state’s digital governance infrastructure and maintain compliance with evolving national security standards.

“Digital public infrastructure is the backbone of citizen‑centric governance. The government is continuously investing in strengthening critical digital systems to ensure that essential public services remain secure, reliable and resilient,” Kharge said in a statement.

The Hardware Security Module plays a crucial role in Karnataka’s digital ecosystem by securely storing encryption keys used for Aadhaar authentication. Aadhaar‑based verification is extensively used across government departments for the delivery of welfare schemes and public services.

According to the government, nearly 10 to 12 lakh Aadhaar authentication requests are processed every day in the state. The software upgrade will incorporate the latest security patches, bug fixes, and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)- supported enhancements to improve the system’s performance, security, and long-term stability.

Officials said the maintenance activity has been scheduled during non‑working hours to minimise inconvenience to citizens and government offices. The upgrade will be undertaken between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. on July 31, August 1 and August 2.

The government has also put in place contingency measures to ensure that the impact on public services remains minimal during the maintenance window.

Kharge reiterated the state government’s commitment to building a secure and future‑ready digital ecosystem.

“The government remains committed to strengthening cyber resilience and safeguarding citizens’ digital data. Ensuring the security, reliability and continuity of digital public infrastructure will continue to remain our highest priority,” the Minister said.
