Ladakh Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena recently met with Sonam Wangchuk, a climate activist and representative of the Ladakh Apex Body (LAB). During the meeting, the Lieutenant Governor advised Wangchuk to avoid disrupting the ongoing dialogue between the Centre and the Union Territory. Saxena emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive atmosphere for both developmental initiatives and political discussions.
In their interaction, Saxena expressed concerns to Wangchuk about the potential negative impact of spreading misleading or provocative information that could harm public discourse. Wangchuk acknowledged an error in judgment when comparing Ladakh to Manipur and expressed a willingness to reassess his stance if needed. The Lieutenant Governor also highlighted the adverse effects of continuous rallies and protests on tourism-related economic activities in Ladakh.
Acknowledging positive development projects like the Him Sarovar project and various canal restorations, Wangchuk appreciated the recent initiatives undertaken in Ladakh. Additionally, representatives of the Ladakh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance recently met with Ministry of Home Affairs officials. Following the meeting, it was revealed that the Centre had tentatively agreed to grant Ladakh a Legislative Assembly with both legislative and executive powers, paving the way for a Chief Minister with administrative authority over senior bureaucrats.
While discussions are ongoing and a final agreement is yet to be reached, there is optimism in Ladakh regarding the Centre’s favorable consideration of the region’s demands. The potential outcomes of the agreement and the extent to which the Centre will meet Ladakh’s demands remain subjects of keen interest and observation.
