Lalit Modi has expressed his support for Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Arun Singh Dhumal’s suggestion to expand the IPL window, amidst ongoing talks about restructuring the global cricket calendar post-2027. Dhumal highlighted the potential for growth beyond the current 74-match format, especially with declining interest in bilateral cricket and the rise of franchise-based leagues like The Hundred, the Big Bash League, and SA20.
Acknowledging the constraints of the international calendar locked until 2027, Dhumal mentioned the challenges in immediate expansion. He indicated the need for discussions post-2027 to explore options for extending the IPL window. Dhumal proposed solutions such as reducing bilateral commitments or finding new windows in the global schedule to accommodate the IPL’s growth.
Highlighting the evolving landscape of cricket, Dhumal emphasized the shift towards more league-based competitions over bilateral series. He underlined the IPL’s increasing global impact and suggested a future with fewer bilateral matches, more league cricket, and interspersed ICC events, akin to the structure seen in football.
