Indian tennis icon Leander Paes has advised National Sports Federations (NSF) across the country to take cues from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Indian Premier League (IPL) on how to enhance professionalism in sports, not just at the elite level but also at grassroots levels. Paes emphasized the need for other sporting bodies to collaborate with the BCCI and IPL to understand and implement professional standards in sports.
Paes, a veteran at 52 with numerous Grand Slam titles to his name, highlighted the importance of sports like hockey, football, tennis, and badminton in emulating the support system provided by the BCCI for grassroots cricket. He stressed the significance of nurturing talent from the grassroots level to ensure a strong foundation for sports development in the country.
Reflecting on the challenges faced by professional athletes in India, Paes acknowledged the financial constraints and lack of adequate support. He commended the dedication of Indian athletes on the global stage despite the substantial costs involved in pursuing a career in sports. Paes, known for his remarkable achievements in men’s doubles and mixed doubles, expressed admiration for the commitment shown by Indian athletes in overcoming obstacles.
Currently serving as the brand ambassador for the GS Delhi Aces franchise in the Tennis Premier League, Paes continues to advocate for the growth and professionalization of sports in India.
