After enduring days of intense heat, Delhi and the National Capital Region saw a welcome change in weather on Saturday morning with light rain and cloudy skies. This sudden shift brought temporary relief to residents, offering respite from the scorching temperatures and heatwave conditions. The city experienced dust storms, gusty winds, and intermittent rainfall, bringing smiles to many faces.
Delhi is currently facing unstable pre-monsoon weather characterized by strong winds, dust storms, and scattered showers in various areas. The recent weather change follows a prolonged period of extreme heat, transforming the city into a virtual furnace. Despite the rainfall, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ for Delhi and nearby regions, warning of continued severe heatwave conditions until May 27.
Many residents expressed relief after the rainfall, highlighting the impact of the extreme heat on their daily lives. A taxi driver mentioned how the heat had affected both him and his vehicle’s performance until the cooler weather arrived. An auto-rickshaw driver shared that the unbearable temperatures had made work extremely challenging, making Saturday’s cooler climate a welcomed change.
The IMD has cautioned about stormy rainfall activity across 13 states and predicted heavy rainfall in northeastern and southern regions due to the advancing southwest monsoon. Strong winds with speeds up to 65 kilometers per hour are expected in various areas, with heavy rainfall warnings issued for northeastern states, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. The southwest monsoon is anticipated to progress further, triggering widespread rainfall in southern and northeastern parts of the country over the next few days.
