Inga Ruginiene stepped down as Lithuania’s Prime Minister after a tenure of just over nine months. The outgoing cabinet, in its final meeting, unanimously approved a resolution for their resignation, as reported by local media. Ruginiene expressed pride in the government’s achievements and thanked her colleagues for their contributions to the nation’s welfare.
Speaking after the meeting, Ruginiene reflected on her time in office, emphasizing the importance of courage and empathy in leadership. She dismissed the notion of conforming to stereotypical expectations of a prime minister’s image and behavior, advocating for authenticity in leadership. Ruginiene denied claims of being sacrificed by her party, attributing her resignation to a regular political process.
The resignation resolution will be handed over to Lithuania’s President Gitanas Nauseda, who will request the outgoing cabinet to serve in a caretaker capacity until a new government is formed. The coalition agreement mandates the President to nominate a Prime Minister candidate to parliament within 15 days. Social Democratic leader Mindaugas Sinkevicius has been put forward for the position.
The new ruling majority, comprising the Union of Democrats “For Lithuania,” the Social Democrats, and the Lithuanian Farmers, Greens, and Christian Families Union, will witness changes in at least four ministerial portfolios. The Democrats are set to oversee agriculture, energy, and health, while the Social Democrats will lead the environment ministry. Ruginiene is expected to assume the role of Lithuania’s Minister of Social Security and Labour in the upcoming cabinet.
Prior to her term as Prime Minister, Inga Ruginiene held various leadership positions, including Minister of Social Security and Labour and roles in trade unions. She has been a Member of Lithuania’s Parliament since 2024, bringing a wealth of experience to her political endeavors.
