English football club Liverpool has dismissed their head coach, Arne Slot, following his two-season tenure. Slot, a Dutchman, led the team to their 20th league title in his first season but faced challenges in the subsequent year, finishing fifth in the Premier League 2025-26 and missing direct qualification for the UEFA Champions League 2026-27.
Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), expressed the difficulty of the decision, acknowledging Slot’s significant contribution and success during his time with the club. Despite Slot’s initial success, Liverpool struggled in the 2025/26 season, earning only 60 points in the Premier League, a decline of 24 points from his debut season.
The club praised Slot for securing the league title in his first season, earning the LMA Manager of the Year award, and achieving Champions League qualification in consecutive seasons. Slot, who took over from Klopp in 2024, was Liverpool’s second permanent manager in nearly ten years but was released from his contract early.
Liverpool has initiated the process of appointing a new manager, with reports suggesting that Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola is a top contender. Iraola led Bournemouth to a sixth-place finish and secured their first-ever qualification for the UEFA Europa League.
