Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya met para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar, who won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026. Jhandu received a cash reward of Rs 10,00,000 for his achievement.
Jhandu Kumar secured the bronze in the men’s heavyweight para-powerlifting event with 130.9 points and a best lift of 190 kg. He topped Group B, surpassing competitors from Uganda and Australia, to advance to the medal round.
In a closely contested battle, Jhandu’s effort of 130.9 points earned him the bronze medal. Nigeria’s Riluwan Idris clinched gold with the best overall lift, while England’s Matthew Harding took silver. The sports minister praised Jhandu for his accomplishment, highlighting the importance of supporting para-athletes.
Delighted by Jhandu Kumar’s success, the sports minister commended his dedication and performance at the Commonwealth Games. Jhandu, who hails from Bihar and was affected by polio since birth, transitioned from para athletics to powerlifting, achieving significant milestones in his sporting career.
Under the mentorship of Rajinder Singh Rahelu, Jhandu emerged as a prominent para powerlifter in India. His remarkable journey includes setting national records and winning medals at international competitions, showcasing his talent and determination.
