Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla traveled to Bangladesh to represent the Indian government at the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected government in Dhaka. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, achieved a significant victory in the parliamentary elections. The BNP Parliamentary Party elected Tarique Rahman as its Leader, positioning him to take the oath as the Prime Minister later in the day.
Several foreign dignitaries, including Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Pakistan’s Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, were present at the event. Nepal’s Foreign Minister Bala Nanda Sharma and Sri Lanka’s Health Minister Nalinda Jayatissa were also in attendance. The United Kingdom’s Indo-Pacific Under-Secretary, Seema Malhotra, and possibly Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu were expected to participate as well.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs confirmed Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s attendance at the ceremony. The MEA emphasized the strong bond between India and Bangladesh, highlighting the shared democratic values. The 13th parliamentary election in Bangladesh took place recently, with the BNP securing a significant number of seats.
The BNP emerged victorious in most constituencies, with a few results still pending due to legal directives. Jamaat-e-Islami and other parties also secured seats in the election. With Tarique Rahman poised to lead Bangladesh, experts foresee challenges in addressing unrest and extremism in the country.
