A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is expected to cause widespread rainfall in several districts of south Bengal in the coming days, as per the Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata. The system, formed in the northwest Bay of Bengal due to a cyclonic circulation over south Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh, is likely to strengthen over the next few days. The monsoon trough’s influence from Rajasthan through Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand to the Bay of Bengal coast is also affecting the current weather conditions.
Heavy rain is not anticipated in Kolkata, with scattered rain, thunderstorms, and lightning forecasted for the city on Sunday and Monday, accompanied by wind speeds of 30 to 40 km per hour. However, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, West Burdwan, Jhargram, Purulia, and Bankura districts may experience heavy rain over the next two days. Gusty winds are expected in almost all districts of West Bengal, with wind speeds reaching 40 to 50 km per hour in some areas. The Met department has cautioned about thunderstorms in south Bengal, while scattered rains are predicted to persist from Tuesday onwards.
Due to the low-pressure area’s impact, the sea is rough, with gusty winds blowing at 35 to 45 km per hour, leading to a temporary ban on fishermen going to sea until Monday. Rainfall is also forecasted to continue in north Bengal, with Darjeeling under a heavy rain warning from Tuesday to Thursday. Jalpaiguri and Kalimpong districts are expected to experience heavy rain from Monday to the following Saturday. Additionally, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar districts may receive scattered heavy rains from Tuesday onwards, with a yellow alert issued for these areas. While North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, and Malda districts are currently experiencing scattered rains, no weather warnings have been issued for these regions.
Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 26.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday morning, slightly below normal, while the maximum temperature on Saturday was 29.6 degrees Celsius, three degrees below the usual temperature.
