A low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal is expected to cause widespread rainfall in Tamil Nadu in the upcoming days. The Regional Meteorological Centre predicts isolated heavy rain in various western and ghat districts until May 19. This weather system has enhanced conditions conducive to rainfall, especially in the Western Ghats, delta regions, and coastal districts.
The Regional Meteorological Centre suggests that the southwest monsoon may advance over parts of the south Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands by May 16, marking the gradual onset of the monsoon season. Light to moderate rain with thunderstorms and lightning is anticipated in isolated areas across Tamil Nadu in the following days.
The western districts and hilly regions are likely to experience significant rainfall due to moist winds associated with the low-pressure system. The Nilgiris district is under a heavy rainfall warning for May 14, 15, and 17. Coimbatore district’s ghat areas may witness heavy showers on May 15, while intense rainfall is expected in Theni district on May 16.
Authorities advise caution, especially in vulnerable and hilly areas prone to waterlogging and landslides. Delta districts may also see thunderstorm activity and moderate rainfall, offering relief from the recent hot and humid weather. Temperatures in Tamil Nadu have slightly decreased, bringing temporary relief from the above-normal summer heat experienced in recent weeks.
In Chennai, partly cloudy skies are forecast with possible light rain over the next two days. Daytime temperatures are expected to be around 35 to 36 degrees Celsius, accompanied by high humidity levels.
