Lucknow celebrates as two esteemed doctors, Dr. Rajendra Prasad and K.K. Thakral, receive the prestigious Padma Shri award for their exceptional contributions to medicine. Dr. Prasad, a renowned pulmonologist and tuberculosis specialist, is recognized as the pioneer of the Pulmonary Medicine Department at King George’s Medical University (KGMU). Dr. Prasad, who started his career at KGMU as a student and later became the Head of the Department, attributes his success to his family’s unwavering support. Meanwhile, K.K. Thakral, a distinguished Ayurveda surgeon specializing in Shalya Tantra, also joins the ranks of Padma Shri awardees. Recalling his journey, Thakral shares his family’s migration from Pakistan to India during the Partition in 1947. Despite facing initial challenges, his father’s emphasis on education laid the foundation for his success.
Thakral’s academic excellence and commitment to Ayurveda led him to excel in his studies and become a prominent figure in the field. Throughout his career, he has remained dedicated to providing quality healthcare to economically disadvantaged communities. He emphasizes the significance of affordable and accessible healthcare, particularly for marginalized groups like laborers and low-income individuals.
Highlighting the advantages of Ayurveda as a cost-effective and indigenous medical system, Thakral applauds Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiatives to promote AYUSH and traditional medicine. He stresses the importance of preserving and promoting traditional healing practices for the benefit of public health and national welfare.
