French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the significance of the escalating tensions with the United States over Greenland as a strategic wake-up call for Europe. Macron, during a joint press conference with the leaders of Denmark and Greenland in Paris, reiterated France’s solidarity with Denmark and Greenland. He highlighted the importance of asserting European sovereignty, contributing to Arctic security, combating foreign interference, addressing disinformation, fighting climate change, and fostering sustainable development.
Macron expressed France’s strong commitment to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity within the European Union. He assured that France would uphold these principles in alignment with the United Nations Charter. Meanwhile, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called for NATO to play a more significant role in the region, particularly in and around Greenland.
Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen reaffirmed that sovereignty remains a non-negotiable aspect for his government, despite pressure from the United States. Nielsen stressed that Greenland’s territorial integrity and borders are red lines that must be respected. Greenland, as the world’s largest island, operates as a self-governing territory under the Kingdom of Denmark’s umbrella, with defense and foreign policy controlled by Copenhagen.
US President Donald Trump’s repeated expressions of interest in acquiring Greenland since 2025 have been met with rejection by Europe. The desire to “obtain” Greenland has not found support, with Europe standing firm against such propositions.
