Shipments of ‘Made in India’ smartphones increased by 8% in 2025, with a 28% rise in exports and a 1% growth in domestic sales, as per a recent report. Exported smartphones made up around one-third of all phones produced in India, highlighted by Counterpoint Research’s ‘Make in India’ Tracker. Foxconn Hon Hai saw a 48% year-on-year growth in exports, primarily fueled by strong Apple shipments.
Tata Electronics, a significant assembler of Apple devices, also played a role in the export boost. Samsung’s in-house production also saw a 4% year-on-year growth in its export contribution. Research Director Tarun Pathak emphasized the increasing importance of exports for India-based smartphone EMS players and the country’s broader export strategy.
The government’s acknowledgment of the sector’s rising significance is evident through SEZ reforms, budgetary support, Union Budget announcements, and recent FDI relaxations. Despite potential near-term challenges like disruptions from the US-Iran conflict and rising memory prices, the sector is poised for growth. Domestic EMS players are expanding, driven by exports and sustained premiumization in the local market, according to senior research analyst Prachir Singh.
The growth of India’s component ecosystem, supported by initiatives like the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), will be crucial for enhancing domestic value addition.
