The Madhya Pradesh Higher Education Department has introduced mental health awareness as a significant component of the induction program for newly enrolled college students statewide. Starting from July 1, both government and private colleges are mandated to conduct Mental Health and Wellness Programs for freshers at the onset of the academic year. The initiative aims to educate students on mental health issues and equip them with coping mechanisms for stress, anxiety, depression, and other emotional challenges they may encounter during their college journey.

Colleges will host sessions focusing on stress management, time management, emotional balance, positive thinking, meditation, and life skills as part of the program. Additionally, students will be briefed on available counseling services and support systems. The institutions are instructed to engage local mental health experts, psychologists, and counselors to interact with students, offering guidance on maintaining emotional well-being.

Apart from mental health awareness, the induction program will cover topics such as anti-ragging regulations, grievance redressal procedures, mentor-mentee relationships, cyberbullying, and responsible online conduct. Students will also be introduced to the various support mechanisms present on campus, including counselors, mentors, anti-ragging committees, and internal complaints committees.

Recognizing the critical link between students’ mental health, academic performance, and overall development, the directive stresses the importance of fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive educational environment right from the beginning of the academic session. All colleges are required to ensure maximum participation from newly enrolled students and submit detailed reports, photographs, and other relevant information regarding the program to the department.

The initiative aligns with recommendations from the National Task Force, established by the Supreme Court, underscoring the necessity for robust mental health support structures within educational institutions. By aiding thousands of students transitioning into colleges across Madhya Pradesh, the program aims to facilitate their adjustment to campus life and encourage seeking assistance whenever necessary.
