Large parts of Madhya Pradesh are experiencing severe heatwave conditions, with temperatures soaring between 42 and 46 degrees Celsius in various districts. This has led to a significant drinking water crisis, intensifying the political tussle between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Groundwater levels have plummeted sharply across the state, exacerbating the situation.
Water scarcity has become a pressing issue in both urban and rural areas, with reports of irregular water supply emerging. The Congress has criticized the BJP government and civic bodies controlled by the BJP for their alleged failure to ensure adequate and safe drinking water despite substantial expenditure on various schemes. The Leader of Opposition, Umang Singhar, accused the state government of spending significant amounts under the Jal Jeevan Mission and other water schemes, yet failing to address the public’s water needs effectively.
The crisis is visibly impacting several districts in Madhya Pradesh, with distressing scenes of children trekking long distances to fetch water in Umaria district. Videos circulating on social media depict the dire situation where wells and hand pumps have dried up due to the scorching heatwave. In Tanda village of Guna district, residents are resorting to collecting muddy water from pits for their daily needs, highlighting the severity of the water scarcity.
In Bhopal, known as the “City of Lakes,” borewells in various areas are running dry, and the Narmada water supply has significantly reduced. Residents are facing water supply for only a few minutes daily in some localities, leading to a surge in reliance on private water tankers. The cost of water tankers has surged, adding to the financial burden on the residents.
The Congress’s campaign gained momentum as protests erupted in Indore over water shortages and contamination concerns. The state government, on the other hand, is emphasizing pipeline expansion, water conservation, and augmentation projects. However, with the water crisis escalating and public distress mounting, the issue is evolving into a significant political battleground ahead of the upcoming municipal elections in Madhya Pradesh.
