The Madhya Pradesh government has presented a status report to the Indore Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court concerning the contaminated water emergency in Bhagirathpura, Indore. The report, spanning about 15 pages, confirms that four individuals have lost their lives due to consuming the contaminated water. Additionally, it reveals that approximately 200 individuals have been hospitalized, with 35 of them requiring intensive care.
Advocate Ritesh Inani, the president of the Indore High Court Bar Association, filed a Public Interest Litigation on this issue. He expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s delayed submission of the report, emphasizing that it highlights the deaths of four individuals and the hospitalization of 200 people, including 35 in intensive care units. The court has scheduled further hearings on January 6 regarding this matter.
In response to the crisis, authorities have been instructed to ensure the continuous supply of clean water through tankers and to provide necessary medical assistance. The contamination of drinking water in Bhagirathpura has resulted in a significant public health emergency, causing multiple fatalities and widespread illnesses. The outbreak of acute diarrhoea, vomiting, and dehydration is attributed to sewage seepage into the municipal water supply due to a pipeline leak near an inadequately constructed toilet.
