Madison Keys faced a tough challenge from Oleksandra Oliynykova in her Australian Open title defense opener at Rod Laver Arena. Despite falling behind 4-0 in the first set and the first-set tiebreak, the World No. 9 managed to save two set points and secure a 7-6(6), 6-1 victory in the first round.
Oliynykova, making her Grand Slam debut and first tour-level appearance, had not played since December’s ITF event in Ecuador. Ranked 92nd on the WTA Tour, she struggled against Keys, her first top 50 opponent, showcasing a unique playing style that challenged the defending champion.
Keys acknowledged Oliynykova’s strong performance, praising her competitor’s skills and competitive spirit. Despite initial unforced errors and a slow start, Keys regrouped to dominate the match, winning 90% of points on her first serve in the second set and displaying control in the final set.
