Maharashtra Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare expressed the state government’s ambition for a “child marriage-free Maharashtra.” The department has implemented a modern system to eradicate child marriages, emphasizing community involvement.
The campaign, “child marriage-free Maharashtra,” has successfully prevented 1,400 child marriages last year and 1,450 marriages this year. Minister Tatkare highlighted the link between child marriages and socio-economic vulnerabilities, particularly among migrant laborers in the Marathwada region.
To address safety concerns for young girls, the department has set up ‘Bal Gruh’ shelters and a tracking portal for migrant workers’ children. The Women and Child Development Department is enforcing a zero-tolerance policy against child marriages, taking legal action against all involved parties.
Authorities intercepted and halted 34 child marriages on Akshay Tritiya alone, showcasing the department’s proactive stance. The District Child Protection Unit of Ahilyanagar prevented 155 child marriages and filed FIRs against families promoting such marriages. Strict measures are in place to handle underage mothers under the POCSO Act.
Minister Tatkare urged citizens to report any child marriage incidents promptly to ensure a child marriage-free Maharashtra.
