The Maharashtra State Charity Commissioner has instructed Tata Trusts to delay a crucial board meeting planned for Saturday due to complaints about alleged violations in the composition of the board of trustees of Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT). Tata Trusts mentioned that the directive specifically pertains to SRTT and is ex parte in nature. The meeting, initially set for May 8 but rescheduled to May 16, was anticipated to address matters concerning Tata Sons, such as the potential listing of the company and the reappointment of Chairman N Chandrasekaran along with other nominee directors.
The charity commissioner’s order, issued without prior notice or a chance for SRTT to present its case, is currently under review by the Sir Ratan Tata Trust. Maharashtra Charity Commissioner Amogh S Kaloti confirmed an ongoing inquiry following complaints regarding the composition of the SRTT board of trustees. The directive also prohibits the trust from convening any further meetings until the inspector inquiry report is furnished.
Advocate Katyayani Agrawal, who sought the Charity Commissioner’s intervention, revealed that Tata Trusts has been instructed to defer all upcoming board meetings pending the inquiry. An appointed inspector will conduct an investigation and submit a report to the Charity Commissioner. The complaint, lodged on April 18, concerns an amended provision from September 2025 that limits the number of perpetual or lifetime trustees to 25% of the total board strength.
