Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has declared financial aid of Rs 5 lakh for the families of those who died in the Bhandup bus accident. The incident occurred when a BEST bus hit pedestrians on the crowded station road in Bhandup West, Mumbai, resulting in four deaths and nine injuries. The victims have been identified as Pranita Sandip Rasam, Varsha Sawant, Mansi Meghshyam Gurav, and Prashant Shinde.
The bus driver, Santosh Ramesh Sawant, has been apprehended after the bus lost control while reversing and collided with pedestrians. Eyewitnesses reported that the bus seemed to be speeding before the accident. The tragic event has reignited memories of the Kurla bus tragedy, emphasizing concerns over pedestrian safety and driver training.
Transport experts have highlighted the need for improved pedestrian infrastructure, protective barriers near bus stops, and enhanced driver training to prevent similar accidents in the future. Until these measures are implemented, the risk of accidents like those in Bhandup and Kurla will persist.
